Electric Mini

In a last ditch attempt to keep with the trend and drive more sales Mini are introducing a full electric version, the Mini Hatch. Industry rumours have it Mini focusing on performance to persuade potentially interested buyers and “fence-sitters”. Mini won`t be developing a new specific EV power-train for the present UKL 1 Platform, which the Mini resides.

The Mini UKL 1 Platform`s modular system is developed by BMW, they share it around like a big spliff as it were.

Essentially BMW’s compact range of vehicles and mini-suvs make use of the Mini UKL 1 Platform.  A cost-saving measure really, designed for very efficient manufacturing.

Most manufacturers use this production strategy. One sure way that`ll boost profitability on every single car made.

It`s almost certain that the Mini Hatch is going to borrow the same proven181bhp electric powertrain used in the BMW i3.

Driving range at the moment is estimated in the region of about 200 miles. In real world terms it`s roughly a 120 mile range.

The full electric Mini will be very similar in power output to the 189bhp Mini Cooper S. That said, the electric cars have that instant torque on acceleration, which internal combustion engines just simply can`t match.

The lithium-ion batteries will give the full electric Mini a serious weight penalty. We`ll know how fast each other is when the full electric Mini is launched later this year.

Big time for Mini this year, they`ll be celebrating their 60th anniversary. So will the full electric Mini be a contender and fitting tribute to the famous Mini brand? Or is this just a very clever way to beat tougher emissions targets?
